Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
