EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
